the "conscious filmmaker"®

UPDATED – March 11th, 2014:   Our definition of a Conscious Filmmaker is an artist with the aware intent to create motion pictures imbued with an enlightened purpose.  Now, why do we refer to such a filmmaker as conscious? Let’s work to fully understand that word.  The word “conscious” is derived from the Latin “conscientia” which means knowledge within oneself, a “sense of right, a moral sense“.  A deeper etymology tells us that the first syllable derives from the Latin com (con) which means with or thoroughly, combined with the Latin “scire”, which means to know.  This is likely borrowed from the Greek “syneidesis” that means knowledge.  So the word conscious can be said to literally mean “thoroughly with knowledge”, and in this context can also mean thoroughly privy to, knowing and aware.  So at its root, consciousness is…

Arguably, Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List” is the the most conscious film of the past generation.

So at its root, consciousness is also awareness… For a Conscious Filmmaker this consciousness serves as the aware intent in the process of creating a motion picture.

In the context of a Conscious Filmmaker empathy accompanies such awareness.  And empathy leads to a desire for those outside of oneself to benefit from positive outcomes and experience.   Empathy fuels compassion, which allows us to feel what another is feeling. And when such consciousness is shared, it becomes a powerful and beneficial symbiotic feedback loop that lifts and evolves society in the most positive way.

All creative works are to some degree works of consciousness.  However, when we refer to a film or filmmaker as “conscious”, we are referring to a standard or quality of consciousness that reflects the most positive aspirations – the manifestations of which are necessary for true societal evolution.   So what we are addressing here is the quality of consciousness.  One can say that any living creature, even an insect, is conscious.   However, there’s an obvious wide gulf in the nature and quality of consciousness between an insect and a human being.  The same holds true for creative works, and especially films.

A motion picture is more than simple passive viewing.  Whether we realize it or not, it is an experience, that even though vicarious, possesses the potential power to move us deeply in a positive or negative direction.  A film will serve to either enhance our consciousness, or dull it.  And in extreme circumstances it can work to even devolve our conscious being.

Gratuitously violent films that serve no other purpose, but to revel in the gory destructive expressions of evil are in my opinion movies imbued with the least amount of consciousness.  They can even be said to be unconscionable.

Such works are to be distinguished from films that may contain horrific violence; however the violence depicted is not gratuitous and wanton, but necessary for communicating a higher message.  Perhaps the greatest conscious film ever made was Schindler’s List.  And yet, it depicted horrible violence; but such depictions were necessary in order to awaken people to the evils of Nazi Germany and a racist, authoritarian regime.  The same logic is true for the film, Saving Private Ryan.  Its opening twenty minutes were the most accurate depiction of warfare ever revealed in a motion picture.

Let me also unequivocally state that our emphasis on promoting the Conscious Filmmaker approach isn’t to be confused with any faith-based media endeavor.  In fact, I have found that some of the most unconscious works are among the most religiously tainted motion pictures. Conscious filmmaking is distinct from the promotion of any sectarian theological worldview.  A Conscious Filmmaker production certainly can have a theme inspired by a spiritual faith tradition;  however a truly conscious film is never to be defined by the application of a religious litmus test.

Now that you know what a Conscious Filmmaker motion picture isn’t, the next question is how do we determine what truly is a conscious film?  The most conscious films are those that ultimately serve to enrich an audience, and thus society.  But there is another advantage to a Conscious Filmmaker approach that should also be intriguing to those individuals, studios, institutions and companies who fund movie endeavors.  Ironically, it turns out that those films which meet a unique set of criteria also happen to be among the greatest box office successes.  I’ll demonstrate below how a focused “Conscious Filmmaker” approach to producing movies greatly benefits both society and those who invest in such motion pictures.

Over 25 years of experience in creating conscious media has led me to determine three foundational elements of what constitute a Conscious Filmmaker production.  These elements are based on the affirmative response to the following questions:

1.  Does the film reveal complexities of the human condition in a non-exploitative manner and/or affirm the life of others?
Does the film depict the joy or struggle inherent in any aspect of the human condition, and in so doing affirm and validate the experience, and thus human life in general?  Or, does it also in some way, give more life to the audience (does the audience walk away from the movie feeling more alive); and/or does it explicitly or implicitly acknowledge the worth of others, of humanity?

2.  Does the film depict selfless or noble action towards another, or others, in a non-exploitative manner and serve to elevate humanity?
Through the actions of the protagonist(s) does it either implicitly or explicitly support, uphold and demonstrate the transcendent, inherent and priceless dignity and value of humankind and the individual.

3.  Does the film challenge its audience and/or inspire its viewers to connect?
A conscious film often will challenge our paradigms and constructs.  It can inspire us to evolve, and often can even offend and anger those who remain rigid in their social, ontological, and even religious perspectives.   It can also allow us to connect with something deeper within, or something greater outside ourselves.   So we also ask does it challenge and/or connect with a greater consciousness, an idea, new paradigm, character and/or plot development, or a profound emotion?  Or, does it awaken in us a new profound realization that we also connect with?

You will note that the term “non-exploitative” is used in elements one and two.  This is an important consideration. There are films which are created with ostensible or even insidious agendas that appear to embrace these elements, but are little more than either religious or political propaganda.  This does not rule out films with religious or political themes; however, we must exercise wise discretion when considering whether such films meet the standard of a motion picture that truly reflects a Conscious Filmmaker approach.

Box office history demonstrates that the vast majority of the top grossing films of all time scored at least an 8 out of 12 possible points in our proprietary “Conscious Filmmaker Index” matrix, which means that for the most part these motion pictures could answer yes to all three of the above questions.  The following link is from the Box Office Mojo website, and it is a list of the most financially successful (inflation adjusted) motion pictures of all time:   TWO HUNDRED TOP GROSSING MOVIES

Examine this list and then ask yourself for each movie you recognize: Was it life affirming? Did it elevate humanity? Did it challenge and/or inspire the audience to connect?  For at least 90% of these films, the answer is yes. Even if one’s interest in filmmaking is purely for capitalistic gain – there is no rocket science in realizing the unparalleled opportunity that a Conscious Filmmaker® approach represents.  Such films are a win both for humanity and any investment portfolio.

Knowing this truth has always led me to ask:  Why, when given the unparalleled forum to create and distribute a motion picture, would anyone desire to take anything less than a “Conscious Filmmaker”® approach in the production of a movie created to be seen by tens of millions?  When that question begins to be asked more by funders, sales agents, distributors and especially filmmakers, we will see no less than a radical revolution in the quality, consciousness and success of movies released worldwide.

What is a life calling?  It is exactly what you have been placed upon this planet to achieve.  It is your vocation.  In a very real sense you are called to be a “priest” or “priestess” of that endeavor.

A calling may have ego mixed into it, but ego will never be a conscious contributing element to the success you seek. Many pursue certain goals that are motivated purely by ego. And ego is often fueled by pain born from a sense of lack of acceptance, or even abandonment.  It takes enormous courage to be honest with oneself in conducting such self examination.  When an endeavor is pursued fueled only by ego –  it’s like attempting to run a marathon after being nourished solely on a diet of gummi bears and cheap beer.  You may start out strong, but you’ll never make it.

How do you know your true calling?  First of all it will be related to something you’re already good at.   And it’s often some gift or talent that’s also already been confirmed by impartial parties.  You will find validation of your abilities outside of your close family and friends.  Such validation may start there, but eventually others will notice and can’t help in some way or another to acknowledge the light of your gift shining through.

The next step is to understand and embrace the process that makes manifestation of your “life calling” possible.  And, based on my own experience, I sum it up this way:

There is nothing more assured in its manifestation than an endeavor ignited by passion, empowered with genuine knowledge, and pursued with enthusiastic unrelenting perseverance.

Yes, if you truly seek to achieve your life calling  then measure your methodology by the above litmus test.  That is what it takes.  Nothing succeeds like intelligent action.  I refer to it as The Three “P’s” of Success:

1. PASSION – for your calling.  Either you have it or you don’t.  If you have to ask what such passion is or feels like, trust me, you don’t have it.  Look deeper to find your real calling.

2. PREPARATION.  That is what’s referred to as genuine knowledge.  Passion is not enough.  You must be willing to take the time to learn, practice, rehearse and understand better than anyone else every facet of your calling.  Learn how it’s reached… Understand what to do when you get there… And prepare with uncompromising intensity to be the best at it that you can possibly be.

3.  PERSEVERANCE.  I like to add the adjectives “enthusiastic” and “unrelenting” when describing this kind of perseverance.  It’s the kind  that never gives up.  Enthusiasm is vital here… It’s a word derived from Greek that in its meaning literally was once defined as “possessed by a god”.   Manifestation requires that kind of divine intensity and inspiration.  There is no room for failure.  If something doesn’t work the third, fourth, fifth even one hundredth time… You keep going… However, don’t keep attempting the same strategy over and over again expecting different results.  That’s the classic definition of insanity. Rather, with each setback, learn how to adapt and evolve.  And remember with each obstacle encountered, you’re still one step closer to the manifestation of your calling.

This is more than just a roadmap to achieving your ultimate goal.   This is about actualization… It’s literally about evolving into the real you.  The “you” you’ve been called to achieve, and the you that the world needs and is waiting for… But you don’t need to wait any longer.  Let go and BE.

I will share something I never shared publicly before.  Have you ever wondered where the term “Conscious Filmmaker” came from?  It all began on February 14th, Valentine’s Day, 2007 .  It was the one year anniversary of my beloved mother transitioning from this life to the next.  Besides the fact I was still coping with the grief from the human loss of my mother, I could see that things were beginning to change for us as a company.  Vision4Media was transitioning from a production house that focused only on “commissioned”, that is “work-for-hire” productions, to a company that would pursue a more arduous course, and create it’s own original content and deliver it to the marketplace of ideas – with the hope that in the end, this is where we would find our own greatest truth, and success.

I was meditating, and in my meditation, I reached out to my mother.  I asked her, what can we do to differentiate this passion within, and use media to communicate on a deeper level.  And with thoughts cleared, and an open heart, two words appeared in my mind…. “CONSCIOUS FILMMAKER”.   (Yes, it was in all caps.)   🙂

My heart started beating rapidly… I exited my meditative state and walked over to my computer and immediately checked to see if that term was even in use, and if the URL was available. To my utter amazement – the term was not being used at all!  And in fact all URL permutations were available!  So I registered ConsciousFilmmaker.com, .tv, .org… and I proceeded to trademark the name.  This was my mother’s gift and it wasn’t intended just for me.  Knowing my mother and who she was and even still is, Mary would’ve wanted all to benefit from and evolve one another, and others, through embracing such an ethos.

As I write this, we are at a crossroads.  Our initial crowdfunding campaign was successful enough to raise nearly $2000 towards a $39,000 goal to shoot 18 pages of an amazing motion picture script written by Gary A. Bickal, an acclaimed screenwriter and multiple Nicholl Fellowship Quarterfinalist.   Because our allotted time to raise these funds expired, all pledges were returned, as we now prepare to relaunch our campaign.

In today’s world, depending on how one looks at it,  the funds we seek to raise, is certainly not that much money … In fact, it’s an insignificant amount when compared to a $17 trillion U.S. economy, and the endless abundance that Providence certainly can provide.

In my latest blog article (http://wp.me/pVrSi-4Y) regarding our quest in pursuing the creation of “Conscious Filmmaker”® entertainment.  I wrote the following:

“When we first decided to place our project on Kickstarter we had conducted what we thought was more than sufficient research.  We viewed all the most successful projects.  And then told ourselves, “We can do that!”  In fact, we knew that in some ways we could do even better.  But we missed something.

What we subsequently learned was that these successful projects already had prior hugh networks in place.  We had no such advantage.  In fact the most successful crowdfunded feature in Kickstarter history was launched by the wife of an actor on one of the most successful sitcoms on TV.  And a star was already attached.  Between those two actors there were already tens of thousands of Twitter and Facebook followers.  Add to that support their connections within studios and the advantages were overwhelming, as compared to a scrappy little company like ours with no such connections, but a long and multiple award-winning track record.  We are doing our very best in leveraging all our friends on Facebook, our Twitter accounts, my existing blog, and LinkedIn to bring attention to our cause.”

As we prepare to relaunch, more than ever I want to emphasize, that our film production endeavor is worth it.  The need to create this kind of message trumps the interests of the rich, powerful and connected. Alone, we may be none of those things… but with you joining us on this journey, we are all more than triumphant.

In order for a “Conscious Filmmaker” motion picture movement to succeed, it must be, first and foremost, a people’s movement.  It needs to be adopted as YOUR MOVEMENT.

Of course, it would be completely disingenuous for me to say that my commitment to a Conscious Filmmaker ethos is not personal.  I can’t apologize for that.  It is.  But being personal to me, does not exclude the fact that I greatly desire for the world to be able to share in the light and transformative effect that such a commitment can have on others.

There has been no more powerful a means on how we choose to behave, the ethics we choose, even the faith paths we follow than the medium of stories.  Since the dawn of our time here, we have found ways to define ourselves, our limits, and our eternal nature through stories.  Motion pictures at their core are stories.  Jesus himself, I believe, would be a filmmaker today.  All scripture is what?  Stories.  All movies are what?  Stories.

We have an unprecedented opportunity in history to leverage the power of communication mediums that can reach out into the furthest regions of this planet… mediums that we could have never imagined just a generation ago.  Hand held devices, hand held tablets, digital theaters, … even holographic projections from devices that will be as small as a wristwatch, which will soon be available – all these with the power of instant access to OUR stories – through the power of the greatest communication medium in history – our Internet.  Yes, now is the time.  We can do this.

That’s the vision… We can do this.  I don’t merely believe… Belief often times is blind and ignores all other circumstances, and there are times in our life when that is necessary… No, rather, this effort takes faith… Strong faith.  That I have.  And I know you as my friends share that same strength of faith, and together, that faith is an unstoppable force of light, that the world can’t ignore.  Help me, help us, illuminate the greatest truths through the power of storytelling… through the power of motion pictures that will serve as modern parables that will deliver great transformative and conscious truth.

And if for no other reason, let’s make history together!  To this date, I know of no other motion-picture project that will have raised so much money through crowdfunding, that wasn’t in some way deeply connected to the Hollywood motion picture industry.  We are not.

We are proudly and unashamedly independent.  Completely independent.  We answer to no Hollywood studio politics or agenda. And we will remain that way.  Stand with us, won’t you?  Let Vision4Media become the people’s studio.  We will make films created to both entertain and to enrich… enrich you, your friends, family, loved ones, children and generations to come with stories that will enlighten and recognize the deepest truths within all of us.

Many of you have already generously pledged to our initial campaign.  And to you, you have my deepest gratitude, recognition, and a depth of appreciation I can never express through any words.  Others believe in what we’re doing, but for whatever reason did not pledge.  I understand.  And I also know that for many even a $1.00 pledge can be a difficult sacrifice given the harsh economic times you may be experiencing… And again, I understand…But everyone who reads this, whether or not they have the ability to contribute a pledge, does have a resource that transcends any amount of money.

And that is the POWER TO ADVOCATE. Some of you have already done both.  You have pledged and advocated and continue to advocate, and to you I owe a debt of gratitude beyond my ability to repay.  Thank you.

But I must continue to implore all my friends, with the greatest depth of passion, love and commitment within me to please continue to advocate… and if you haven’t done so, I kindly ask you, with a great urgency to start.   Let’s get this first of many “Conscious Filmmaker” movies made – which in turn will be your movies.  Yes, you can join in the role of a co-producer with me to manifest a new era in motion picture entertainment.

How do you advocate?…  I will soon let you know how… as we redesign our crowd-funding campaign.

We’ll ask you to join with us, and help prove that this can be done.  That this is something YOU want.  Help us transcend and revolutionize the existing system of storytelling.  Let’s break through and overthrow the monopolies of class and privileged access, that prevent so many from bringing films to market with stories that need to be told.

Join with this revolution… and know that you CAN change the world.

"An “awakened” Conscious Filmmaker embraces and accepts that there is a deeply meaningful foundation to life, and the majority of his/her productions in some way will reflect or communicate such meaning..."

Anyone who has read my blog knows that I define a true Conscious Filmmaker® as an artist with the aware intent to create productions imbued with an enlightened purpose. Such media includes motion pictures and television programming that motivate, persuade, and/or provoke transformative thinking that enriches an audience and encourages the conscious evolution of society.

An enriched and evolved society is one in which loving kindness and compassion are the norm, and practiced both individually and culturally, while guiding all legal, civic and governmental structure and policy. It is one that’s inclusive, kind, respectful and tolerant of all people, regardless of race, age, gender, sexual orientation, faith tradition, social class, economic status, spiritual belief or non-belief.

Some Conscious Filmmakers can be said to be “awakened” and committed to a higher purpose. They sense themselves “called” to work towards manifesting an enriched, evolved society locally, nationally and internationally.  In the awakened Conscious Filmmaker this stems from a deep awareness to leverage his/her gifts, talents, technical and aesthetic capabilities in a purposeful manner.

Not all filmmakers who create what can be called “conscious” productions are necessarily awakened to such purpose. For them the “conscious” aspect of filmmaking is not so much a state of being, as it is a state of flow, and execution. In other words, the conscious work just simply “happens”, and that filmmaker has served as a creative (sometimes serendipitous) “conduit” for the production of such media.

...Vision4Media Entertainment has embarked upon a path to create independent film works all driven by a Conscious Filmmaker ethos. We now have seven films in development ranging from documentaries to dramas to science fiction...

An “awakened” Conscious Filmmaker embraces and accepts that there is a deeply meaningful foundation to life, and the majority of his/her productions in some way will reflect or communicate such meaning.   And the awakened Conscious Filmmaker also accepts that there is a definitive qualitative aspect to the “Conscious” nature that inspires such films.

This awakened “Conscious” nature is defined as the recognition of a deeper “presence” within.   The “presence” can be expressed through the lens of any faith tradition, ontological awareness or spiritual orientation as either God, Christ, Christ Consciousness, Buddha Consciousness, Allah, Yahweh, Jehovah, Elohim, Brahman, Sophia, Higher Self, Ground of All Being – or any number of other names ascribed to an assumed, existing and conscious, all loving power, Presence or Source, that is inherently and knowingly recognized as transcendent, eminent, immanent, eternal and infinite.

Being “Conscious” in this definition is the awakened recognition of one’s inner purpose, through an experiential sense of belonging and oneness with that divine, deeper or higher presence.  Such awakening guides individual growth and transformation that causes not only spiritual evolution, but a desire to work towards the evolution, transformation and enrichment of society and the world.

It’s also important to define what a Conscious Filmmaker production isn’t.  It’s not a faith-based production.  A Conscious Filmmaker media work would never be so presumptive in its perspective to either proselytize or evangelize in the name of any faith tradition or creed.   Additionally, a Conscious Filmmaker production is not to be mistaken for a “family film”.  (Not that a Conscious Filmmaker® production can’t be a family film; however, it can’t be defined by such a genre.) Schindler’s List, which is perhaps the most conscious film ever made, is certainly not a family film, nor even “family friendly”.  And yet, it stands as a beacon of virtual perfection in terms of what a Conscious Filmmaker motion picture can accomplish.

My entire production career has been oriented from an awareness to create from a place of greatest consciousness within.  The choices I have made in the works I’ve created have all in one way or another been a reflection of my personal Conscious Filmmaker motivation.  Most recently, my company Vision4Media Entertainment (of which I am a partner) has embarked upon a path to create independent film works all driven by a Conscious Filmmaker ethos.  We now have seven films in development ranging from documentaries to dramas to science fiction.  Each film is highly entertaining and serves to enrich an audience, raising their awareness and encouraging positive transformation.

"Rocks, Snakes and the Art of Desert Cooking" is the first feature length motion picture that fully represents our "Conscious Filmmaker"® production approach. Click on the picture to learn how you can be a part of the "Conscious Filmmaker"® movement

We are taking this slate of films with us to the Cannes International Film Festival in May.   And as part of our marketing package we are planning on shooting and producing 18 pages from an exceptional script we have optioned from Gary Bickal – an extraordinary, award-winning screenwriter.   I encourage everyone reading this to learn more about our endeavor to introduce our unique brand of Conscious Filmmaker® independent movies to the world.  One of the first full-length features we are preparing to shoot is entitled Rocks, Snakes and the Art of Desert Cooking. I invite you to learn more about this extraordinary movie project by clicking on the picture above, or the link at the end of this article.  We are currently engaged in a special “Kickstarter” fundraising campaign that if successful, will allow us to shoot 18 pages from the “Rocks, Snakes…” script as a special presentation for the international sales agents, distributors and buyers at the Cannes International Film Festival.

Our campaign has a March 28th deadline… My hope is to virally expand the recognition for the need of on-going, Conscious Filmmaker movie production by securing enough small $1.00 online campaign pledges to reach our goal.  If after watching the very brief presentation, you find yourself resonating strongly with the message, I kindly ask that you go one small step further… Pledge a dollar and tell a friend.  Giving birth to a new era in filmmaking can only happen with your support.  Join us in our Conscious Filmmaker® campaign and help co-create conscious and powerful entertainment that can transform our world.    To do so, click here:  http://kck.st/dQ4hq2

The following is something I posted on Facebook back in January of last year.   It holds more relevance for me today than ever before:

When led by light on your path both destined and chosen, walk that path, and do what you are called to do in life with such great passion; so that if you were to be indicted for that which you do, a jury of your peers would unanimously find you guilty as charged.

If “they” are not willing to drag you to prison, bound, gagged and shackled, while throwing away the key – then you’re truly not living the life meant for you.

I invite all who see and understand to join me in the following anthem of conscious rebellion:

I am not in the slightest interested in being a mere mortal –
Succumbing to the accepted “wisdom” of mayic decay over time…
There is an eternal youthful, noble sense within…
A “knowing” that “all this” – the illness, plagues, ravages of age, the whining constitutions…
Even the illusory apparition called death…
Only manifest by a trembling volition which has chosen surrender.
Such capitulation will never be nourished within my being.

So let my defiant battle cry now resonate across the cosmos…
I choose not to surrender my youth!
I have invited her to forever stay and together we’ve created a playground in the now.
In every breath, I remain young in deed;
Yet, wise in thought, and relevant to all that evolves within and around me…
I will leap, walk, play, run vast distances as I have done, and even more so…
I will embrace Life and madly celebrate her and with her.

There are lips yet to kiss, and a lover yet to make love to for millennia times millenniums …
And she, who embodies the sacred beloved will travel with me to regions of unknown, adventure
Igniting over and over again new enthusiasms that dwarf those of a past slumbering youth.
Its passionate fire fuels and nourishes the dancing muses of my soul…
And the new creations that are birthed through me will number as the stars…
So let the walking dead continue to bury the dead.
My time is never to come… for my time is now…

And I will remain…  forever young.

My Religion

Posted: February 17, 2011 in Conscious Didacticism, Motivations

I have finally awakened to the following truth:   If I have any religion, it is the religion of “Life”.

I worship the very heart of its divine presence… I cherish its moments in exquisite, depthless wonder – gazing awestruck – stilled and silent in speechless, loving astonishment.

I am utterly and hopelessly in love with Life.  The very fount of it I embrace as my truest beloved.  And yet, I cannot merely embrace her, I must fully immerse myself in her presence, in one eternal sacred act of lovemaking, utterly inebriated by ethereal sensuality more real than mortal senses can perceive.  Such beauty so transcends what we mistake for clearest sight.

And for me to define her presence within any “faith-based” construct  would not only be arrogant, but would constitute despicable, savage and heinous sacrilege.  Let us never mistake any dogma for Life.  One says you must nail yourself to its signposts… the other simply and silently whispers in passionate, thunderous ecstasy…

“I Am” here.  Ani L’Dodi L’Dodi Li

On Christmas Eve of 1968, Apollo 8 was the first manned spacecraft to ever orbit the moon. James Lovell of Apollo 13 fame, was the command module pilot for the mission. Apollo 8 was also famous for bringing us the ubiquitous image of the earth as a blue and white shimmering sphere, a celestial jewel seemingly alone in the vastness of space. It was the first time we ever were able to look at our planet in that way.  As Apollo 8 orbited the moon, it came to the sunlit part of the lunar surface. The crew of Apollo 8 then sent a greeting to earth, and spontaneously took turns reading a portion of the biblical creation story from the Book of Genesis. It was an awe-inspiring moment. Remember, at that time, man had never ventured so far out into space. It is breathtaking to embrace that realization.

Imagine yourself, in 1968, never having been exposed to the Internet, or today’s widely available computer technology… Imagine what it was like for an audience with access to only three television networks all tuned in to this broadcast. The grainy black and white video image is primitive by today’s standards, yet it bears a certain mystique representative of an era, where thousands of engineers and scientists pushed their available technological capabilities to the very limit. It’s amazing to consider that an inexpensive flash memory stick with 1 billion bytes of memory – has more than 125,000 times the memory that was available on the lunar module’s guidance computer, a piece of technology that was considered a huge leap for that time.

I remember watching this live broadcast as a seven year old boy, being raised in an impoverished housing project by a single mom, captivated by the idea that we could leave this planet and reach for other worlds. An old 12 inch, black and white, Admiral TV set was my window to the realm of possibility. The lunar space program was the inspiration that always stayed with me… an inspiration that spoke to that kid more than 40 years ago stating: Anything is achievable. Nothing is impossible.

Because of the mind set I adopted from watching the lunar program, and a very courageous mother who would not allow me to give up, I was able to break that cycle of poverty. That era was something very special. It also represented a fascinating dichotomy in what was occuring in our nation and the world at that time.

Keep in mind, 1968 was a year of great turbulence… Our national psyche had been severely traumatized. First, the Tet Offensive took the Vietnam War from bad to worse; then the assasinations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy; unrelenting riots in the streets culminating with the infamous uprisings in Chicago during the the Democratic National Convention – there were many who even doubted that our nation could remain united and viable. Ironically, all this served as the backdrop for a space program that was elevating mankind towards the exploration of new worlds – a collective striving to achieve what poets and philosophers had only dreamt of since the dawn of our existence. Less than eight months after Apollo 8 orbited the moon for the first time on that Christmas Eve of 1968, Neil Armstrong forever placed the footprints of humanity on the lunar surface.

In consideration of all we confront today, we have to keep in mind that despite all the seeming darkness that had enveloped an era a generation ago, we still managed as a people to not lose sight of who we were… what we’re made of… what is possible. And as spiritual beings having a human experience there were and are no limits to what we can achieve, even in the face of the most daunting circumstances. 2010 with all its issues, has nothing on 1968! We will overcome and triumph over all the challenges we face today.

And something greater than me, inside of me – believes and even knows that despite all we confront in this generation, we can and will find that drive again, dream again and this time create a world worthy of all children. It’s Christmas Eve, 2010. Let’s decide to birth the miracle and magic of the divine child within us, and make love manifest – as the gift that can truly save this planet, making all dreams possible.

I wish you the most blessed and wonderful Christmas of your life thus far.

To quote the closing words of the Apollo 8 broadcast from the moon:
“God bless all of you… all of you on the good earth.”

There has been much written about a recent “Manifesto for Conscious Men” now on Facebook.   I read the manifesto; and although I absolutely embrace it in principle… the evils inflicted upon women have little to do with any notion of masculinity.  They have everything to do with cowardice and fear.   With that understanding, here’s my alternate conscious manifesto that defines a real man in relation to women:

Real men don’t abuse women… Real men embrace the feminine aspect and presence of women.

Real men respect and honor women and every aspect of them  – including their femininity, capacity for intuition, spirituality, nurturing and compassion.

Real men are not threatened by a woman’s power, but rather work with that power in a complementary manner in order to achieve a more loving, conscious and compassionate world.

Real men tell their daughters, wives and sisters that they can aspire and become whatever they desire; and real men ensure that a world manifests where all opportunities are gender blind.

Real men don’t have to prove they’re real men.  However, real men know that for them to be a man, a woman must be free to be fully a woman.

Real men refuse to see women as objects for merely sexual conquest and self gratification.  They stand as warriors against the cowardly vermin who do.   Real men know that for the expression of sexuality to be a holistic, ecstatic, and beautiful “life-giving” manifestation of divine love,  it can only happen within the context of a committed and intimate relationship… Anything less demeans the priceless value of such expression at best; and can be emotionally, and even physically devastating at worst.

A real man gives whole and complete, loving dedication to the one woman who has also given herself completely to him.  Real men know such a bond can never be broken.

Real men share the responsibility for any new life they create with a woman… and are true, dedicated and loving fathers to their children.  And real men demonstrate love and respect to the mothers of their children.

Real men see women as their equals…as partners, as absolutely precious.

Real men know that the existence of ALL could not be without the feminine force in the universe.  Real men not only embrace that reality, they worship it.

Real men understand that at the core of feminine power lies the seed of all creativity… and real men forever hold that sacred and honor it.

Real men are “conscious” men and maintain the necessary awareness to transcend sexism, and view women as equals, as gifts from divine providence… Real men know that it’s only in combining the efforts of both genders towards conscious evolution can all of humanity grow to share in the fullness of divinity.
